Army ambulance Captain Anson is ordered out of Tobruk just before it isbesieged in 1942. He is fatigued by battle, dependent on drink, anddespisedby his friend and fellow officer who wrongly suspects him of asking to bereleased from the siege.

With Sergeant Pugh, the squadron's senior mechanic he prepares to leave, butenemy action separates them from the rest of the column and presents twonurses as unwelcome passengers. They later encounter Van der Pol, anebullient South African Officer who offers to share his large rucksack ofgin if the ambulance crew will give him a lift. The five then set offeastwards, trying to reach Alexandria, and safety.

But nothing about the journey is straightforward and Anson must deal withthe desert, enemy forces, his own alcoholism, and the growing realisationthat one of their number is an enemy agent. An incident in which one ofthenurses is killed forces Anson to face up to his drunkenness and hepromiseshis next drink won't be until they reach 'Alex' and it will be a coldbeer, giving the film its title.

As the journey progresses the identity of the agent becomes obvious, butinparallel the others find themselves becoming drawn to him because of hisbravery and integrity. The setbacks and hazards in the desert asks toughquestions of them all, but none more difficult than how to remain loyalbothto their country and to an enemy soldier to whom they each owe theirlives.

John Mills as Anson, and Anthony Quayle as Van der Pol head an excellentandwell-directed cast. Sylvia Simms and Harry Andrews support, without takingthe limelight and although the script occasionally dips below standard, nothing can really detract from one of the finest wartime stories evertold.

I recently watched the film again after many years. It bears its agewell and I had forgotten the number of nail-biting sequences:brigadier's car blown up, chase by Germans, second check by Germans,Anthony Quayle in the quicksand, and best of all, "winding" theambulance up the sand cliff to get out of the Qattra Depression, etc.etc.

The four main characters play their roles well although my personalfavourite is Anthony Quayle as the South African/German. Hesuccessfully conveys a figure of strength and confidence, balanced by asense of defeatism when his true identity is revealed.

John Mills is solid in his playing of the worn-out but still doggedBritish officer although he is diminutive against Anthony Quayle andHarry Andrews.

Sylvia Sims is plucky and just about believable whilst Harrt Andrews istotally dependable as the sergeant.

Altogether a cracking film !

Ice Cold in Alex used to show up on the late show on CBC years ago, and ithasalso been on some of the cable channels. It gets better with eachviewing. When the subject of war movies comes up, I always tell people this is myfavourite war movie, and, in my opinion, one of the best - and usuallyget ablanklook. They recognize the cast when I list them, though. And it is a greatcast -Mills, Andrews, Quayle. And I am totally in love with Sylvia Sims in this.(Iguess I must have a thing for beautiful women, with no makeup, sweating inkhakis. I loved Juliette Binoche in Canadian battledress in The EnglishPatient, too - but I digress).

This is simply good storytelling and great character drama in a settingthattests character, with an authentic look and feel and superb B&Wphotographyofthe kind that distinguished so many post-war 'neo-realist'films.There are so many great moments such as van der Poel lifting theambulance, the'surprise' encounter with the SAS (?) man, the Blimpish officer'sencounterwithan 88-mm shell in his Humber staff car, Mill's moments of crisis, stunningcloseups of Sylvia Sims, and and especially that moment in the bar whichmakesyou want to run out for a tall frosty one. Next time I view it, I willindeed have acold Carlsberg waiting in the fridge. Years ago, I was sailing across LakeWinnipeg to Gimli on a slow, hot July day, with little wind, I promisedwewouldenjoy beer and pizza when we finally made it to harbour, and I wasthinkingofthis movie.

I am also a bit of a military vehicle buff, and I like this movie forthat, too - forme, the ambulance - I think it's an Morris-Commecial CS11/30F, or maybe aFord WOT2, but I'd have to see the movie again to be sure - is also oneofthestars. Cranking-up-the-sand-dune is probably my favourite scene with it.TheWages of Fear /Scorcerer comes to mind as a comparablevehicle-as-charactermovie.

Vehicle buffs will also enjoy the anachronism of seeing a Land Roverparkedonthe street in the background of the final shot - the car wasn't inproduction until1947.
