What a terrific comeback for Shyamalan! Many have been vocal thathorror writer-director M. Night Shyamalan has been on a downward spiralafter having peaked with Unbreakable, his very own superhero originsfilm. Split sees the continuation of Shyamalan's tryst with thesupernatural but also a long awaited rhetoric that this filmmaker wasmerely waiting for the right moment to resurface. While his last film -The Visit - was predictable but entertaining, Split underscores hisstorytelling prowess with the high level of creativity that made him ahousehold name in contemporary horror.

Yet fans will concur that Split isn't just a comeback either, rather atactical setup of Shyamalan's very own cinematic universe. Putliterally, the film is about a person with multiple personalities whereeach personality speaks collectively in full awareness of the rest.Although main character Kevin is said to exhibit 23 personalities, wesee just a handful during most of the film. There's Barry, a New Yorkfashionista, Hedwig, a goofy 9-year-old, and darker personalitiesPatricia and Dennis. Calling themselves The Horde, the latter two haveinfluenced the abduction of three high school girls as a ritualisticsacrifice for the 24th personality often referred to as "The Beast".The girls have limited time before The Beast is unleashed and althoughparalysed by fear, their escape depends on protagonist Casey's (AnyaTaylor-Joy) proactive deconstruct of the good and evil personalitiesthat reside in Kevin. To her advantage and through revelatoryflashbacks, we learn that this wouldn't be the first time Casey wouldconfront a monster.

If Edward Norton's dual personalities was chilling in his debut filmPrimal Fear, wait till you get a load of James McAvoy in what is simplyan outstanding performance of versatility (or should I say two dozenperformances in one film?). More than just a demanding role to pulloff, McAvoy's broad range in this film has also elevated what couldhave been a familiar antagonist into a nerve wrecking supervillain.Which is why Shyamalan's so called signature twist ending is almostastounding. To be honest there isn't an actual twist in the story, butthe ending is an unexpected but seamless integration into a sort oftrilogy that will have most viewers gob smacked. It's an inside jokeand almost as if Shyamalan is asking if we have you been watchingclosely, but also an extremely rewarding Easter egg for every true fanof the man. Welcome back Mr. Shyamalan!

I was once a fan of M Night Shyamalan. I absolutely love The Villageand Signs and feel he was on a fantastic creative run at one point. That ended when he made The Happening and then even worse, The LastAirbender. I thought The Visit was a nice reminder that he could bringforth an entertainingly thrilling film. I was hoping Split would giveme the satisfaction of being comparable to M Nights' glory days but Iam sad to say I am disappointed.

The film is about three teenage girls who are unexpectedly kidnapped ina parking lot by a mentally ill man with dissociative identitydisorder. He has 23 different personalities and a 24th called the beastwhich seems to be the most threatening of them all. The hype for thisone seemed to be real and I heard many raving about it but I didn'thave fun during this film.I know many won't agree with some of mycriticisms but I wish I could have liked this more.

First of all the film should have been shorter. There were areas of thefilm that dragged. M Night was trying to build tense moments , a lot ofwhich I felt fell short and were worn out. I have a background inpsychology and know of dissociative identity disorder but am certainthat a lot of the elements of it were fantastical. Too manypersonalities and that final form stuff just doesn't gel well andborders on silly. Not to mention the shift between characters feelsincoherent at times. Saying all that I have to say that James McAvoy isabsolutely superb in this. Like so alluringly good. I'm glad an actorof his caliber was able to showcase his range and ability although Iwish the film was written better.

The transpiring of some of the events were so stupid. There are a fewplot holes but I couldn't ever really sit back and enjoy the film. Thethree actresses did a decent job, Anya Taylor-Joy will certainly becomea big name but I have a hard time getting over the implausibility andthe buildup to the final act. I don't want to say anything that willspoil it for other viewers but the ending is pretty cool and a nicecallback to a time where M Night was on top of his craft.

6/10

James Mcavoy delivers an astonishing performance, unfortunately, in a"sinking ship" film. And that's not the only wasted thing here, thequite original premise falls down into the pedantic narrative. Themovie ends in a mix of predictability and petulance.

I was wondering how could Shyamalan take that path after all, he cameup with a great idea and ruined it AGAIN.
